Some cards have short Latin mottos emblazoned on a banner wound around the suit elements, to emphasise the meaning. In the older The Visconti-Sforza tarot cards book, the background and the gold embellishments seem nearly brown. The Fool from the Pierpont Morgan Library is noted as having no place in the trump sequence. The metallic sheen of the Medieval Scapini literally pales in comparison. The Scapini pack is nothing short of amazing, one of my favorites that I never expected to be a favorite, but it is not a historic replica by any means. Each of the Major Arcana cards are presented with a black and white image, traditional numbering with the exception of Justice as VIII and Strength as XItraditional English titles, a brief description of the figure s in the card, the background and meaning for the card, along with upright and reversed divinatory meanings.

It is sold with 54 cards; the 5 to 10 of the red suits and the 1 to 6 of the black suits are removed. Some cards have short Latin mottos emblazoned on a banner wound around the suit elements, to emphasise the meaning. This coincided with the older game being renamed tarocchi. Mary Greer's book on reading reversals give glimpses of traditional divinatory meanings. The so-called occult tarot decks are based on decks of this type.

There are many versions of the Visconti-Sforza deck on the market — I have them all. Mary Packard is able to tell the story in a fresh way that honors current historical understanding. It is not a book for beginners. The author, Mary Packard, is not a known tarot expert.

These were the oldest form of tarot deck to be made, being first devised in the 15th century in northern Italy. Waite's Pictorial Key To The Tarot [6]the High Priestess card is associated with: Secrets, mystery, the future as yet unrevealed; the woman who interests the Querent, if male; the Querent herself, if female; silence, tenacity; mystery, wisdom, science.

As mentioned above, part of this is due to their nature - they could not hold up to usage. The suit of spades shows figures dressed in full armour, carrying a large sword.

Visconti Tarot Decks

The first printed rules of play date from the seventeenth century. One of the reasons for this is that there are discrepancies within the book that make no sense, such as descriptions of the cards that in some ways do not match the card being shown i.

Tarotists will be pleased to see that it carries a foreword from our own Robert M.

The Visconti Sforza Tarot: A Book by Cristina Dorsini

It functions something like a wild card that can be played at any time. Diviners ethics are The Visconti-Sforza tarot cards book presented - perhaps in a more rigid manner than is necessary. Playing cards first entered Europe in the late 14th century, most likely from Mamluk, Egyptwith suits of Batons or Polo sticks commonly known as Wands by those practicing occult or divinatory tarotCoins commonly known as disks, or pentacles in occult or divinatory tarotSwords, and Cups.

I compared pictures online of the The Visconti-Sforza tarot cards book editions alongside pictures of the Lo Scarabeo edition, and went for the latter. According to A. The deck shows the original cream border that extends beyond the blue inner border.

The cards are quite small and not reversible. His contribution here is a very important one - he provides the historical background of the Visconti decks specifically, the Visconti-Sforza Tarot" of the Milanese court, which is important, as they contain examples of some of the oldest surviving Tarot decks.

There are subtle differences in coloring. However, it seems to me the author needed a lot more space to express his full ideas - the few paragraphs given to each card seem brief and sometimes inconclusive. With the exception of novelty decks, French-suited tarot cards are almost exclusively used for card games.

Trumps and face cards have a gilt background, while the pip cards are cream-coloured with a flower and vine motif. It has those awful wide borders with the card names in fifty languages, but the borders are more subtle than in many of their decks so I can live with it; and I love the sparkliness.

This might mirror the importance of the cards - the spiritual and important life influences stand out from the mundane repetition of the everyday. The replacement cards in the Golden Tarot fit in beautifully with the rest of the deck. Consequently, the cards also offer a glimpse of nobiliary life in Renaissance Milanwhich the Visconti called home since the 13th century.

The metallic sheen of the Medieval Scapini literally pales in comparison. Many things! My advice would be to take what works, and leave the rest behind.

The High Priestess

The colors of the foreground figures are not as deep as in the deck. Games Systems has just reissued their facsimile of the Pierpont Morgan Bergamo Visconti Sforza Tarocchi, originally produced in and still in print. Using the Knight of Cups as a template, The Visconti-Sforza tarot cards book flipped the figure horizontally, put a coin in his hand The Visconti-Sforza tarot cards book gave him the same robes as the other three coins court cards.

There is not a better manner in which this book could have been presented. The Hermit is based on Chronos, and carries an hourglass rather than the later addition of a lantern. These two cards have darker tones than in the deck. The images on the cards have been faithfully recreated, showing members of the Sforza and Visconti families in period garments.

The borders of the elegant cards are adorned with gold metallic ink. The accompanying book provides a history of Visconti-Sforza cards, 35 of which are now in the collection of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City/5(4).

The Visconti-forza tarot cards predate the invention of “regular” playing cards with their hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades. They appear originally have been for a game a little like whist, in which you must follow suit or play a trump, and in which you work with a partner to take tricks.
